The conventional wisdom that supporters of a gay marriage amendment in Ohio will also vote for President Bush on Nov. 2 may have some validity but is far from proven, analysts say.
Research is clear that initiatives increase voter turnout, both for midterm elections, as was long suspected, and presidential campaigns, said Carolyn Tolbert, a Kent State University professor and author of a new book on initiatives and turnout.
Earlier this month, a record 42.8 percent of voters turned out for a Missouri primary, which included a gay marriage amendment that passed easily. If the issue passes in Ohio, the state will recognize only unions between one man and one woman as marriage.
What's less clear, and what researchers are still examining, is how a hot button issue like gay marriage translates to voters' support for Democratic or Republican candidates while they're at the polls, Tolbert said.
