Animals were also victims of tsunami

[Dot and Bill Gerber Jr]

The Humane Society International estimates that 100,000 dogs in Sri Lanka alone were left homeless by the storm. Frightened, disoriented and desperately hungry, some displaced dogs have become aggressive. This has led to the mass killing of strays in some remote areas.
Making matters worse is the fact that many animal shelters were destroyed by the tidal wave, and their staff members were among the tsunami's human victims.
In addition to pets and land wildlife the habitants of the sea were also victims. For 25 years efforts have been underway to save five species of endangered sea turtles that nest in Sri Lanka. The very day that the tsunami struck, 20,000 turtle hatchlings were due to be released into the sea. Most of the hatchlings who were ready to be released were killed, still in their hatcheries, by the great waves. Only one adult green turtle survived; a few others were recovered later with their shells badly damaged.
This represents a tremendous setback for the recovery hopes of the world's sea turtles. Despite the huge loss a few hatchlings were released into the sea and work is going on to care for the injured adults.
Two dolphins in Thailand were washed by the tsunami into a newly created land-locked body of water with no way out. After many rescue attempts, the dolphins were finally freed.
One of our readers, Joe Fucini, has provided information on several efforts underway. Pet Supplies "Plus" is raising funds for the tsunami's animal victims by placing donation canisters in its stores. The chain's management and employees are also contributing to the relief effort. All money raised will go directly to the nonprofit Best Friends Tsunami Animal Relief Fund.
