Two gay communists marry in Philippines
[World News]
Two gay communist fighters in the southern Philippines fell in love and got married last week, a local newspaper reported Monday.
The wedding made news largely because gay relationships, including marriage, are considered taboo in the mainstream Philippine society.
The two men known as "Ka"(comrade) Andres and "Ka" Jose, pseudonyms in the New Peoples' Army - the guerilla arm of the Communist Party of the Philippines - were shown in the Philippine Daily Inquirer hand-in-hand under rifles held up for them by fellow fighters.
In a picture pixelized to hide their faces, they were shown kissing behind a red flag bearing the movement's hammer-and-sickle insignia.
The two men were married last Friday in the same rifle-and-red-flag style under which their heterosexual counterparts in the communist movement get married.
The CPP has long recognized gays, movement spokesman Gregorio Rosal told radio DZBB.
"There were numerous debates within the Party. Many raised their eyebrows, including me," Rosal said, adding prejudice and patriarchal cultural orientation initially prevailed, but recognition of gay men and women eventually won out.
The CPP has recognized gays since 1992 as being no different from heterosexuals, entitled to relationships and marriage, Rosal said.
Proposals backing gay marriage, or even tax entitlements for same sex couples, have been introduced several times in the Phillipine legislature but none has passed.
